News Release October 1, 1999 From: The Christian Street Preachers' Alliance Contact: Jim Rudd editor@covenantnews.com WASHINGTON -- A House subcommittee approved a bill August 4th, that permits mothers to murder their unborn babies by abortion. Under the false appearance of establishing personhood for the unborn, the bill expressly ensures that none of its provisions will criminalize ripping apart children in the womb, provided the murder is committed as an abortion procedure. Jim Rudd, Director of the Christian Street Preachers' Alliance said, "The title of the Bill deceptively reads 'Unborn Victims of Violence Act.' However, nothing in the bill protects the unborn from the violent murder of being ripped to pieces from the womb by abortion procedures." It is the first such measure proposed at the federal level, according to the National Right to Life Committee, which helped draft the legislation. The bill calls an unborn child "a child in utero," but does not treat unborn children as living persons with equal protection under the law. The House subcommittee voted 5-2 for the bill, which moves to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration. Its prime sponsors are abortion funding [Republican] Reps. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Charles Candy of Florida, and Christopher Smith of New Jersey. Supporters of the bill said, "What this bill seeks to do is face up to the reality that an unborn child is not a nothing, that's a tiny member of the human family," said Rep. Henry Hide. However, Christians say, the "reality" Rep. Henry Hide, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, "refuses to face" is that the bill does nothing to establish justice for unborn children who are murdered by abortion procedures. "While Congressional Committees meet to discuss do nothing legislation, little babies have their heads cut off just down the street from Capitol Hill -- Its a reality to hard for a lot of people in the Prolife movement to face. Little babies are murdered in the womb because Republican legislators refuse to face reality," Rudd said. Read the entire text of H.R. 2436
